Worlshop Foreman/Controller

The Role

As Workshop Foreman/Controller, you will oversee and control daily activities within the engineering workshop. This is a practical management position, with approximately 80% of your time supporting PSV Technicians on the floor, and the remainder focused on compliance, vehicle inspections, administration, and staff leadership. The role includes providing management cover for the Engineering Manager when required.

Responsibilities

• Controlling the day-to-day workload of the engineering workshop
• Supporting and supervising PSV Technicians
• Allocating work and ensuring repairs are completed efficiently
• Monitoring vehicle inspection and maintenance compliance
• Ensuring all vehicles meet required DVSA and company standards
• Managing productivity and performance of the workshop staff
• Supporting technical decision-making and fault diagnosis
• Ensuring accurate and complete maintenance documentation
• Maintaining high standards of Health & Safety and workshop housekeeping
• Providing management cover for the Engineering Manager

Skills and Experience

• Proven background in PSV, bus, coach or heavy commercial vehicle engineering
• Workshop Controller, Supervisor, or Chargehand experience (or similar)
• Strong hands-on mechanical and diagnostic skills
• Experience managing or supervising engineering staff
• Solid understanding of DVSA standards, vehicle inspections, and compliance
• Excellent planning, prioritisation, and communication skills

A Level 3 Heavy Vehicle qualification and a PCV or HGV licence would be beneficial but are not essential. This role offers a fantastic chance for someone already taking responsibility for other technicians and looking to step fully into management.

Shifts and Overtime

• Early Shift: 05:00 – 14:00
• Late Shift: 13:00 – 22:00
• Rotating pattern ensures varied workload
• Regular overtime at enhanced pay rates
